[ENGLISH VERSION]
Which challenges do you face when communicating your animal research work in everyday working life as well as in your private environment?
"Transparent by Nature – The Bonn community for people working in animal research” is the start of a free-of-charge series of events at the University of Bonn in cooperation with other facilities in Bonn that are also working with animal research.
These events aim to give exciting lectures as well as opening space for direct contact between facilities and to exchange ideas. Its further ambition is to connect everyone – from animal caretaker to group leaders. Whether at the University of Bonn or at one of the non-university research institutions. Sharing experience and practical tips, supporting each other or looking at difficulties from the other person's perspective: A more open approach to the topic of animal experiments in a protected space is a win-win situation for all of us!
The first kick-off talk will be held by Dr Vera Beckert who is a member of the organization Pro-Test Deutschland e.V..
For the interactive part there will be seven small groups (“cafés“) to discuss various topics.
We look forward to your registration and a great event!
09:00 a.m. Welcome
09:15 a.m. Talk Dr. V. Beckert
Afterwards: World Café
- “Culture of Care”
How do I deal with emotional stress (e.g.when I have to kill an animal)? What do I do when I receive an instruction that pushes me to my limits? What happens if I make mistakes (unsuck your science)? What do I expect from my facility or my team? Is it “us and the animal” or “the animal and us”?
- “Talking about animal experiments”
“Yes, I am involved in animal research!” What does talking transparently about animal research transparently mean for my private life? How is my private life affected and how open can talk about animal research? How do I deal with my feelings? What helps me feel safer in the face of criticism?
- “How much transparency do we need?”
How should we present our work to the public? Is it possible to overshoot the mark? The melting pot of feelings: how do we deal with the media? Interesting not only for public relations staff!
- “Animal carertakers among themselves” - only in German
What are the great things about my job and what do we all struggle with? Perhaps there is a colleague who can give me some useful advice on an experiment, on processes in the facility or on other topics...
- “In the shoes of others - we need to talk!” - only in German
There is often not enough time in everyday life for a detailed exchange between scientists and animal caretakers. Is everyone always sufficiently informed about why an animal experiment is carried out in this way? Are difficulties and results discussed openly? Time to look at challenges from a different perspective.
- “The tension between laboratory animal husbandry and livestock farming”
The requirements and husbandry conditions of farm animals kept in Germany and those kept for animal experiments differ in several respects. Insight into the animal husbandry of the others is often limited and fraught with prejudice. “Why do I have to choose the least stressful treatment for my laboratory animal and a painful procedure can be carried out on a farm animal?” “Why is it not an animal experiment if I work with chicken embryos until they hatch?”
We want to provide insights into each other's work and discuss differences and similarities.
12:00 a.m. Summary in the plenary session. Followed by a snack.
